And the comments below!
This year St Patrick’s Day falls on Saturday 17 March 2007.
The main events in Perth that I know of are Shamrock City in Northbridge, and celebrations at Burswood. Other than below, I’m sure many pubs will celebrate this day in their own ways, for example, Murphy’s Lore are playing at The Foundry in Cannington. The Shed in Northbridge has celebrations all day.
The City of Perth has organised the event ‘Shamrock City‘ from 2 to 7pm at Northbridge Piazza on the corner of James and Lake Streets.
Celebrate Saint Patrick’s day with the family at Shamrock City – an alcohol free event. Enjoy the sounds of The Clan Band and Hog Hill Boys perform traditional and modern Irish music. Join in on an Irish jig and enjoy the free children’s activities throughout the day. Bring a picnic rug along and indulge in the many culinary delights available in Northbridge. And don’t forget to look out for those illusive leprechauns!
See the City of Perth website for more info, this event is part of City Food and Wine Month.
Burswood says it has Perth’s biggest St Patrick’s Day celebration, with free entry, live entertainment, Irish dancers, prizes etc. From 10am at Paddy Hannan’s and from 5pm open air at Paddy’s Paddock in the Piazza.
See the Burswood website for more details.
The free South Perth Fiesta Opening Concert is on Saturday evening, and part of the entertainment is the Blue Celts (the main act is Wendy Mathews), from 5pm.
Celtic Strings perform authentic traditional Irish jigs, reels, airs and songs, from 8pm at Kulcha in Fremantle. $12 at the door, $10 presale.
St Patrick’s Day at Ascot
Irish Breakfast, entertainment, beer etc. See Ascot website.
The Blue Celts – Sunday 18 March 2007, 2 – 4pm
Enjoy St Patrick’s Day after with swinging jigs and reels, jumping country blues and soulful traditional ballads at the weekly free Fremantle Arts Centre Courtyard Music.
See The Guide website for a list of pubs in Perth that have something organised for St Patrick’s Day (click through on the pub names to see what)
And for something non-St Patrick’s Day related, check out my weekly what’s on in Perth post!

There’s a few Oktoberfest celebrations happening in Perth during October that I know about.
The Shed in Northbridge celebrates the festival on Friday 20 October from 12noon. Try traditional German style food and German beer in steins that you get to keep.
Elmar’s in the (Swan) Valley is having a beer and food festival from 10am to late on Saturday 21 and 10am to 5pm on Sunday 22 October 2006. There will be German beer, traditional German live music, German food, and a special appearance by Johnnie Young. There will also be fun for the kids and a face painter. Tickets are $10 for adults (includes a glass to keep with one beer, and kids are free) and are available for prepurchase, or get them in the door (first in best dressed). See the website for details.
The Copperwood Restaurant in Kalamunda will celebrate Oktoberfest on 22 October from 12pm to 5pm. There will be a bbq and buffet ($55 p.p.) and an Austrian Yodelling Trio playing beer songs. See the website for details, and I think you’ll have to book.
Duckstein Brewery in the Swan Valley have an Oktoberfest special on all month.
If anyone knows anymore events happening in Perth for Oktoberfest, let me know in the comments below!
On Friday evening we celebrated a friends birthday and watched the footy at BAR138 on Barrack St, Perth.
It’s situated behind the beautiful heritage listed Railway Hotel façade.
The bar itself is quite modern, specialises in Mediterranean cuisine (though we had wedges, which should come with more sourcream and sweet chilli than it did!) and is open from 7am for breakfast. It’s right in the city centre, so also good for after work drinks.
Anyway, I’m not one for reviews, I really just wanted to share the nice building with you! It’s amazing what nice old buildings you can discover in Perth when you pay a bit more attention (or look up!).
I read on their website that they’re hosting a Melbourne Cup Luncheon on 7 November, with the big race on a big screen.
Last week I went to see the Big HOO HAA with friends. It’s on every Saturday night at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den, upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel in Highgate (just north of Northbridge, along Beaufort Street). It’s improv comedy, in the style of ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’ Two teams of comedians competing against each other, often going by audience suggestions.
You can book tickets via BOCS, or get there before 8pm and get your tickets at the door and go back downstairs to get a drink. The show starts at 8.30pm.
Apparently it’s a full house every week (it certainly was last week), so do make sure you book, or get there early. Tickets are $15, $12 concession.
As I said, it starts at 8.30pm. There’s two short breaks (well, there was when we went!), which means you can go downstairs to get a drink in you like, and it finishes around 10.30/11pm.
I was quite impressed with the Brisbane Hotel; an old building, but newly renovated. Very flash! Plenty of parking around the back (for a fee) and in the streets surrounding.

Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den website.
If you love live comedy, you could see it from Tuesday through to Saturday every week in Perth.
Every Tuesday:
Shapiro Tuesdays at Lazy Susan’s – upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel, Highgate
A club for new and established comedians to come down and hangout, try new bits, polish their favourites, and just have a laugh…. $5 entry. From 8.30pm.
Every Wednesday:
The Laugh Resort Comedy Club – Upstairs in the ‘Glasshouse’ of The Brass Monkey, Northbridge.
The show runs from 8.30pm till about 11pm, doors open at 8pm. Price is usually $10 ($8 concession), except the occasional special show.
The Laugh Resort is a not-for-profit organisation, but most of the comedians are professionals that also perform other gigs (see below) and are available for special (including corporate) functions.
Every Thursday:
Comedy Lounge – 509 Charles Hotel, North Perth.
Shows run from about 8 to 10pm. Price is usually $12 or $10 concession and could be up to $25 if a big national or international act is on.
The Comedy Lounge offers different types of packages for special functions.
Every Friday:
Stand up comedy at Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den, upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel, Highgate.
Show starts around 8.30pm. A few more dollars ($15/12), but it is Friday.
Every Saturday:
Big HOO-HAA (improvised comedy) also at Lazy Susan’s.
The Big HOO-HAA has been going since 2002, and the two teams of comedians use audience suggestions to create improvised sketches, in the style of shows like ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’ This is also from 8.30pm, for $15/12.
The Big HOO-HAA can also perform at special functions, including fundraisers.
Also read ‘The Big HOO-HAA – every Sat night‘, a post I wrote in September 2006 after I attented the Big HOO HAA for the first time.
Special events:
Other than these regular shows, there are often special comedy nights, or big name comedians visiting Perth. I will post about these when they are announced, so keep an eye on the comedy category!
If you have anything to add, please leave a comment!
Well, I think everyone knows by now that Australia has gone through to the second round in the World Cup last night.
The Socceroos play Italy on Monday night at 11pm (WA time!).

This info is from an article in the Sunday Times on 3 June!
I also know that All Night Pizza & Kebab Cafe, Albany Hwy, Victoria Park is showing all games (thanks Tom!).
If anyone out there has any more info, please let me know in comments below!
The Sugar Army, The Fault and Grand Central played too, Halogen couldn’t make it. We really liked The Sugar Army, the others were good too, but not really our kind of music.
Fighting for Alaska were good of course, though we were surprised they only played for about 40 minutes! I guess we’ll just have to listen to the new cd for the rest of the songs! 😉
I came across this list of all pubs in Perth.
It has 210 on there so far.
I don’t think the ‘quiz’ part is working though, because it said I visited 0% even though I ticked about 30 boxes.
How many have you been to?
